Tourism in Bosnia and Herzegovina is not only a branch of the economy; it is also a chance to preserve what we are, to improve what we have and to offer what can no longer be found everywhere – authenticity, warmth and experience. Today, when even a smile is charged for in the world, here it can still be found for free, as something extra.

As a tourism professional dedicated to promotion, I want to share a few key thoughts on why branding the local market is not a luxury but a necessity, and how true potential lies precisely in what we often take for granted. Tourism here still has a soul, and that is its greatest value.

Experience is the new luxury

Tourism has become a bridge between cultures, a guardian of tradition and, where it is managed well, a strong economic driver. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, where almost every village has its own story and where nature has been generous, tourism should grow into a movement that revives forgotten regions and restores pride to people. This is not something that happens apart from us, just like that; it is created with us and around us. People create it, and not only through large projects, but through small, personal initiatives that change local communities.

For example, when a rural household decides to welcome guests, that is not only extra income. It is a chance to show a guest what our way of life looks like, to pass on knowledge, tell a story and strengthen the local economy in a sustainable way. Tourism then stops being only an economy and becomes a tool of shared development.

Tourism asks for involvement, not only observation

Today's traveller, and trends confirm this, increasingly seeks experience, because luxury is no longer what is expensive. Luxury is what is rare, real and understated. Our regions offer exactly that kind of rest – through the warmth of hosts, through the story behind every product, a view from a mountain peak, silence by a river. That is not accidental; it is an answer to the needs of the modern person who seeks experience, peace, quiet and content that restores them.

A guest today wants to see how rakija is distilled, to help around the hearth, to taste both the honey and the meadow it came from. They want to try homemade cheese, but not only to taste it. They want to see the cow. They want to see milking and cheesemaking. They want to do it themselves. They want to help with the harvest, to hear how meat is cured or homemade juice is made. It is no longer enough only to show them something; we must include them. And even better, we must learn how to include them.

Authenticity has become the most sought-after currency, and we in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a rural destination, have the natural capital to offer it in its purest form. Such an offer is not only our tourism niche; it is an authentic expression of life. It may be risky to say, perhaps even sad, but in the future children may see farm animals only on agritourism estates. That is why those estates matter to us, as guardians of identity, tradition and knowledge.

"Come, let us bake bread together"

Branding a local product, service or destination must begin with a story. People no longer buy only products; they buy emotion. A video in which a host walks through their estate, a woman explaining how she cooked jam, a child showing a little cow from the barn – that is what stays. Successful tourism stories do not sell accommodation; they invite people into an experience.

The invitation "Come, let us bake bread together" says more than "Breakfast is included with the overnight stay". "Learn how honey is extracted" creates a desire to come, while "We sell honey" does not stir emotion. A successful local brand does not see guests as passing customers, but as fellow travellers in a story they will write together. When that is achieved, tourism is measured not only by the number of overnight stays, but by the number of recommendations.

Nature as responsibility, not a resource

While the world talks more and more about sustainable tourism, in some of our villages that is not a trend; it is a way of life. Food is grown on small farms, water comes from springs, and the relationship to nature is inherited, not learned. That is not a marketing trick; it is the reality of communities that have survived.

At the same time, we cannot close our eyes to the fact that not all of our villages are alive or suitable for tourism. Many rural areas are almost completely abandoned, and their population has been falling for years. Precisely for that reason, where people still live and where local production exists, tourism can become a guarantee of survival and a way to preserve both community and place.

At the same time, we also cannot claim that we can boast of sustainable tourism. We already fail at the first step, which is the percentage of protected natural areas that here is still below every minimum needed for a serious approach to protecting space. But we have what many do not – nature that is (still) not destroyed and that, if we protect it and use it wisely, could become the foundation of a different approach to tourism.

Tourism is all of us

That is why it is important to recognise what makes us special, to protect it and develop it in a way that will benefit both people and place in the long run. Only then can tourism be more than numbers; it can be useful and a guarantee of survival in these lands.

We have a unique chance to be among the rare destinations that have not completely disturbed the balance between tourism and nature. If we set clear rules now, support local producers and protect rivers, forests and customs, our guests will recognise that. And not only that – they will come, recommend us and want to return and be part of that story again.

Today most trips are planned online. A search on a mobile phone decides whether someone will come to us or somewhere else. But digital presence does not mean we have to look like everyone else. On the contrary, we should be authentic there too.

Short videos of how rakija is distilled, hosts' stories about village life, scenes of walks through untouched nature – these are contents that stir emotion. When someone on the other side of the world watches a video of a grandfather or grandmother explaining how they make cheese, they do not see an ad – they see an invitation.

We do not need perfect cameras, but we do need sincere people and real stories. Digital presence must not lose what makes us special, and that is humanity.

The most important thing is to understand that tourism is not "us" and "them". Tourism is all of us together. Hosts, craftspeople, guides, sellers of products and services, from the grandmother at the market, through the receptionist at a five-star hotel, to representatives of municipalities and cities. We are all on the same task. When we understand that, tourism stops being only a job. It becomes a guardian of identity, a driver of development and a way to bring young people back.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has everything the modern traveller seeks – untouched nature, deep tradition, warm people and rich cultural diversity. We must not sell that as a mere product. We must offer it as an experience that changes, inspires and moves.

Because tourism is not a nine-to-five job. When it is done with soul, it becomes a movement, and movements leave a mark.
